Firefly is my favourite sci-fi TV series, I would recommend watching that before the film (Serenity) to avoid many spoilers (though the film does work stand-alone).
Love the Star Trek reboot, Alien, Event Horizon.

Its super worth it!
I also quite like pre-cgi scifi films generally. I find a curious thing, where I can get into alien environments a lot more easily when they are sets, models and video trickery rather than beautifully rendered, perfectly clean type feels. I dont have a problem with cgi but i like the older stuff better. Im more inclined to join in with the imagination of it.
Although cgi has opened up a lot of stuff..

Yeah totally with you on that one. CGI deffo has it's place, especially in sci-fi and fantasy, but the old 'puppet' movies are, hands down, far superior. Had this convo with courage many a time, about Labyrinth & Dark Crystal etc. They just have a much better feel. And you can tell that a lot of time has gone into making the sets. Actual creativity.
