Per the Sage Francis tour thread! Talking about Sage and B Dolan.. I like those guys. I like Sage's ideas but somehow it doesn't always come together right for me. B Dolan isn't 100% consistent for me either, "Fallen House, Sunken City" is so boring. But the House Of Bees records are mint.
My favourite at the moment is JonWayne, his "Cassette 3" and "Rap Album One" were two of my favourite releases of 2013 in any genre. His beats are outrageously cool and his flow is immense. Perfect blend of east and west coast styles. To top it off, he is a young, chubbo, beardy, sandal-wearing white guy. There's no footage on YouTube of him rapping that doesn't blow me away, the Boiler Room set is incredible apart from the lame crowd.
I also really like Kool AD (one of the rappers from Das Racist), he is extremely prolific, releases a bunch of free stuff, and he's hilarious and charming. "Not OK" is my favourite I think, but picking up the highlights from "51", "Not OK" and "Word OK" mixtapes, you have one of the best rap albums of recent times.
One of my favourite albums is "Revolutionary Vol.1" by Immortal Technique. All angry and violent and raw, I love how it feels like you're being told off. I thought "3rd World" and everything after was shit though, I hate the production.
What I'm not into is old school SugarHill type stuff, Atlanta/Southern scene stuff is SO shit, and commercial stuff...

I'm not up to speed on more recent stuff, although that's gonna be changing.
My favourite rap album is Silver Bullet 'Bring down the walls', was instantly at the time, and still is now. Absolutely savage, brilliant diction, inventive, great loops and sounds and samples going on. Utter madness of an album.
(I went through a big list of 90s rap stuff to remember a few of these).
Old school stuff I also like.. Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, Slick Rick, A Tribe Called Quest, Gangstarr, Hijack, Gunshot, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, De La Soul, Wu Tang Clan, Brand Nubian, Jeru the Damaja, BDP / KRS-1, Dream Warriors, Black Sheep, Cypress Hill, Mc Solaar, Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Ultramagnetic MCs, Tim Dog, Dr Octagon.
It's safe to say I was big into rap and hip hop when I was younger. I used to listen to and tape Pete Tong's Rap Selection every week and made loads of compilations of stuff from it, before I was able to buy stuff later.
I was never mad into Ice T, Ice Cube or NWA really, but some Ice Cube I liked.. 'It was a good day' is one of my favourite rap songs ever though.

I'm gonna listen to it again today at some point. It's a masterpiece. It's sort of weird, it's highly political, there's references to a load of stuff that went on in Britain in the late 80s, early 90s, mentioned Thatcher and stuff, but, it still is relevant now. There's absolutely tons of clever word play in it as well. Some of it is just self-appreciation and all that, but yeah, definitely worth a go.
Fuck it, gonna put it on now. There is no better rap album for me. It's a shame his stuff afterwards wasn't so good, went more towards ragga but it's like he'd purged all he needed to with that album, and the subsequent stuff didn't really say anything.

Just remembered Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, listening to their album now. It's still fucking ace... also, reminded me of Leaders of the New School, which was Busta Rhymes' first thing. Absolutely brilliant. In this side bar on Youtube it also mentioned Fu-Schnickens and 3rd Bass, ah, man, good times!!
This is an amazing track.

Got me wanting to post up loads of old school videos now! Haha..
One of the best.. Slick Rick, his story is pretty fucked up. I remember getting this on a compilation at the time, so when I was about 11 or 12. I can't believe his old stuff is so huge now, 6 million views of this song on Youtube, rightly so though, it's brilliant. One of the weirdest voices and deliveries in rap.
Still love this song as well, br00tal! Tim Dog 'Compton'.
These guys were one of the weirder ones, but absolutely brilliant. Black Sheep, amazing flows.
Pete Rock & CL Smooth 'The Creator', their best song I reckon.
Hijack 'Hijack the Terrorist Group', fucking hard! Love this still, and wish there was loads more stuff as good as this.

I think as far as modern alternative hiphop goes, MF Doom is where you wanna be looking to see one of the main influential/seminal styles mr42. That would be one of your main bridgers from older to newer, in the way that you might introduce 2nd wave BM to somebody with Immortal or Darkthrone..

I like groups like Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Eazy E, De la Soul, Wu Tang, Cypress Hill, Immortal Technique, Mos Def, Dalek. 90's & early 00's stuff generally, but I'll give newer stuff a go. Including UK hip-hop like Braintax an that.
