www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-29196629I know I should really stay impartial on this, but, FUCK OFF! This is appalling. The connotations of what this encourages and the behaviour it condones is insane, and the number of people FAR more deserving of something like this is massive. Why is there no statue of Sir Tim Berners-Lee in London instead? I'd say he's a tad more deserving!Obviously I know this isn't QUITE on the same scale, but it's only a few steps away from somewhere like New Hampshire putting up a statue of G.G. Allin or further on, Oslo putting up a statue of Andres Brevick. May as well start sticking up statues of meth-heads and junkies all over place.

She was self destructive and struggling with the addiction that killed her. Not quite in the same category as GG and Brevick. You know I'm not a fan so am not normally on the other side but the statue was paid for by her parents and the people of Cambden don't mind it being there so what's the harm.
It's not about who deserves one more as its the act of grieving parents. **Edit. I do get that Whinehouse always rubs you up the wrong way. If it would have been a junkie from a band you like would you be as bothered? What is it encouraging and condoning?
There will be statues of meth heads and junkies all over the pace, especially if it was a musician from the 60's/ 70's. Bet Jim Morrison has got fucking tons of them!

Fair does if her folks paid for it, and all great they're raising money for a cause like that. That's to be commended, but does that mean that everyone with money can put up what they like and where?
I didn't say it was the same as GG Allin or Brevick, I said it was only a few steps away. In fact, it's probably closer to GG Allin than you'd initially think. If his parents had the money to do this, then it could be possible, which is ridiculous. Also, GG Allin was obviously fucked up, mentally and everything else, was vocal about it and everything he did, didn't give a fuck, was on a self-destruct mission, liked by lots, hated by lots. He was obviously a knob, but stripped down like that, it's not a million miles away.
I'm not disputing she was messed up and struggling with life, but so are a load of people, she acted like an absolute dickhead half the time, so did someone like Allin (although all the time! heh), so good riddance to bad shit.
One massive example, the Ukrainian concert where she was so fucked that she could hardly stand up, let alone sing, turned up late, everyone was booing, these are her fans (not just general gig goers at a festival, say), who, in a country like that had saved up to pay for a still big money ticket to specifically see her (£35 when the average wage is less than £300 a month, I know she doesn't set the prices, but she should have given at least a little thought to that), they didn't get a refund. Some of them sold their ticket stubs on ebay afterwards to try and make money back for it!
Just having a read through other stuff, gigs in the UK she ended up getting booed off stage for being too drunk to sing, stopped playing at a festival in Saint Lucia because she was 'bored', stopped a set in Dubai and got booed off stage. Pretty much ripping off fans, essentially.
Things like that are disgraceful and makes a mockery of music. It's fair does being drunk or fucked up if you can still perform and give a show, even work that in a little, but if you give that little of a fuck about your fans when they're the ones who paid for your addiction in the first place that you can't even finish a set, or speak, or sing, that's disgusting behaviour.
When someone gets THAT big and that adored, especially by younger people, they have a responsibility. It may sound like a cliche corny line that makes me sound well old, but it's definitely more true nowadays than ever before, when 'rock and roll' first started. There's a huge difference as well between rock music and pop music and the way to act in it, especially considering how much more stuff about depression, suicide, self-destruction is prevalent and more ingrained in society.
Everyone knows people get fucked up, but there's no need to act like a dick about it on a world stage. At the end of all that, it just proved (obviously she didn't give a fuck about herself, we all know about self-destruction and all that), but worse so, her family and her fans that have her as a role model. Great role model eh. In the pop world, you could take Robbie Williams as an example, he's admitted to being suicidal and getting fucked up and all sorts, but he clearly treats his fans with a massive respect, always. I've got far more time for him because of stuff like that. We saw Jim Morrison's grave, hardly over-stated, but, yeah, he's another example though of fitting it in with the music that's being played. He maybe was a bit of a dickhead, but since we weren't alive when The Doors were around, we can't be as vocal about it.
Every time I saw her on things as well, (and here's the difference for me), she acted like it WAS 'big and hard and clever'. If people really are that fucked up and doing it because they have little option, then that's completely the opposite to how they are. She was arrogant and wasted an opportunity that most people would kill for.
I don't even think she had a good voice, but that's personal preference. I thought it sounded awful, and the songs were really bad, AND half of them weren't even hers! I find it weird how, even musically, everyone held her up as being really unique when I just think she was really bland and nothing original or new at all.
Obviously it's all down to opinions, and, weirdly enough whilst writing this, I'm listening to Alice In Chains! Reading through Layne Staley's biography though, whilst it showed that he suffered and was absolutely mangled by depression and drug addiction, the same way Winehouse was, it doesn't report of him getting too fucked to play their concerts booked, or stopping half way through or insulting fans. He acted the opposite way by reclusing away from it all when he was too fucked to function.
To be fair, Amy Winehouse did a load of stuff for charity, and sounded like she was quite humble and giving about it, and so fair enough, that's awesome, and redeeming, and fair does if people like her music and singing, each to their own. How you react to a 'star' and what they get up to probably does, in part, get influenced by if you like what they produce, but, I just never liked her, musically, or her attitude, or her actions when she was alive, even earlier on before all this stuff happened. You can't like everyone. She might have hated me, but probably wouldn't have given a fuck about me, even if I liked her.
Know it's probably bad to be harsh, but I just don't understand why she is held up so high, same with Michael Jackson, same with quite a lot of people, but, hey, that scene isn't my scene. I just don't understand, as a general music fan, her appeal, and as someone interested in sociology (I really wish I'd done it at school / college now), I just don't get the appeal of her as a person either, it just seems undeserving.
Anyway.. can you tell I'm bored at work...

I guess just to add then, I can admit my estimations about her have been improved with the charity stuff.. I'm not 100% cold and heartless... maybe about 95% :-)

Mr42 Haha you black hearted douche I'm totally not disputing that she did dickish things, especially turning up ruined and people not getting refunds, that's low. If she was that fucked they should have pulled the show and refunded. As I said, you know I'm not particularly a fan as her as a person or a musician. It's the issue of the statue and I just think so fucking what ha. You honestly think that people in big bands have a responsibility to be role models?? Is that the same with a lot of black metal bands that have young impressionable fans when some of the bands contain murderers, nazis, homophobes... the list goes on. You are fans of some of these bands. It's does seem like a bit of a double standard. You know I'm not getting at you or arguing here ha. Just talking about it. (I always worry about not being able to express tone on the internet) Agree with there being a big difference between pop bands/ 'artists' and the kind of bands that I'd personally listen too. Paid an obscene amount of money and having no talent and being shit to fans as it's all about the money. Justin Beiber spitting on fans from a balcony when they had paid to line up for autographs. That's probably not the worst thing that he's done, or most of them have done. Anyway, yeah she's a bit marmite. Total love or hate. Just because we don't get it you know how it goes, a lot of people would relate to her and, from a sociological point of view she could have inspired people to make music (that isn't shit) and maybe even junkie fans seeing her die could have made them clean up their shit. You never know eh.

and maybe even junkie fans seeing her die could have made them clean up their shit If that's the case, then maybe a positive from it all. Justin Beiber spitting on fans from a balcony when they had paid to line up for autographs he needs a full scale kicking, I'm surprised nobody has given it to him yet. As I say, I think there's a massive difference between pop musicians and extreme metal musicians. Even the biggest or most notorious of the black metal bands / people aren't known by even 1% of the world population, whereas someone like her or Michael Jackson or Justin Bieber are known by pretty much anyone who has ever had a computer / a TV / read a magazine or newspaper in the entire world, and they know that as well. That's why the issue of the statue is more than just the fact that there's a statue of a person somewhere, it's all the stuff that goes with it, and I just think she is a terrible role model for people to have.

When i die, i want a fountain of my cock to be erected (sniggers), because i like my cock, and people can throw money in to the fountain and that money can be collected and given to charities which deal with testicular cancer. I mean, i'd rather my cock than a poorly modelled heroin addict. On a serious, none cock related note, Kurt Cobain is another person who i can't understand the idolisation of regardless of your opinion on his music, the guy did loads of drugs and blew his own head off, and his music is aimed at disenfranchised teens. In fairness to Winehouse she was never really marketed at a vulnerable group but i still think the statue is atrocious. I also realise my opinion is entirely invalid.
